The sound of movement coming up through the hole in the floor drew Toryil, Altera and myself to its edge. Looking down I could see War-Forged placing his lantern on the floor and rapidly readying his sword and shield. Fraiya didn't even look but instead shifted his grip on the rope and began to rapidly lower himself down the shaft. His head had barely passed the below ground level when he was forced to stop his decent, War-Forged was directly below him. Since there was no way down for the moment and there seemed to be a fight brewing I took the opportunity to cast a spell of Mage Armour upon myself.
War-Forged was under attack by two opponents who were running in from opposite sides of the room. By now he had his weapons at the ready and moved from beneath the hole to engage one foe. The enemy was able to turn aside his sword thrust with his axe and deliver a heavy blow in response. The second enemy could easily have launched an attack at War-Forged's back but instead he took a swing at the lantern, breaking the glass and scattering oil everywhere but no succeeding in dousing the light.
Since War-Forged had moved Fraiya was able to drop to the floor, swinging a little to one side to both avoid the small puddle of burning oil and a wild slash from one of the enemy. A second later Toryil simply threw himself down the hole. He landed badly but was able to roll quickly away from the flame.
Now I began to descend the rope as rapidly as I could. Like Fraiya before me I couldn't reach the ground
